Abonnema is a picturesque island community in the Niger delta region of Nigeria with a population of about 100, 000 inhabitants. The town is also called NYEMONI – (meaning “Covet your own” in the Kalabari language) and also fondly called “York City” because of the optimism and social disposition of the people. Abonnema sits on the Sombrero River (an outlet of the River Niger) and was founded about 1882 and inhabited by people of IJAW descent.
Abonnema was a flourishing major Nigerian seaport and traditional market center. The town became a major exporter of palm oil and kernels after the decline of the slave trade. Abonnema was also host to many European companies during the colonial era. The people of Abonnema are hardworking, industrious and resilient by nature despite the myriad of social and economic plagues that are endemic to most African societies. Majority of the work force is either employed by Government or are involved in small scale fishing and farming.
We take pride in preserving our culture, our ancestral heritage, values and way of life.
